CranioSacral Therapy
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a deeply relaxing and gentle modality created by Dr John Upledger. It’s based on three premises:
- We have fascia that runs through our entire body; this entire network of fascia is interconnected and any restriction in the fascia can affect how well our body functions
- Our brain and spinal cord are surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid, and any restrictions or imbalances in this system can affect how our brain and nervous system functions.
- Our bodies have an inner healing intelligence that will help our bodies heal if given the chance.
Restrictions to either the fascial network and/or the space within which the cerebrospinal fluid circulates can happen due to accidents, trauma, stress, repetitive strain, and will accumulate over life. Because the fascia is fully interconnected, the effects often show in areas totally distinct from where the original trauma occurred.
By gently working to unwind the restrictions in the fascial network we can restore function. Similarly, we can use the fascia and the cranial bones to gently release any restrictions affecting the proper circulation of cerebrospinal fluid, restoring proper function to the brain and nervous system. As we do this, the nervous system resets, and your inner healing intelligence can get to work.
Because of its gentle nature, CranioSacral Therapy is particularly well suited to those for whom a regular massage might be too strenuous. There is no changing of position: all the work is done laying on your back. CST is done fully clothed, without the use of oils, lotions, or creams.
